THE CHAD & CHRISTY SECRET
New brunch cocktails with the experts’ touch
The frozen margarita at Wheelhouse is unlike any you’ve had before. There’s something different, not sweeter, but fresher about it. “That’s the splash of dry Curaçao,” says the bartender. “It’s a little Chad and Christy secret.”
The Chad and Christy duo he’s referring to are Chad Solomon and Christy Pope—better known by their cocktail moniker, Cuffs & Buttons. The creative drivers behind the award-winning Midnight Rambler, they also lend their consulting services to create custom menus for bars seeking their intense level of expertise. Case in point: Check out this recent feature on Liquor.com where Solomon and Pope dive into the ways mineral saline impacts cocktail flavor. So yeah, dry Curaçao was just the beginning of things when the two came to build the new menu of brunch cocktails at Wheelhouse.
Their take on the Tequila Sunrise, The Texas Sunrise, elevates the usual tequila-orange base with smokey mezcal, lime, and house-made hibiscus grenadine. More nods to Texas come with the Lone Star Sbagliato. “Sbagliato means ‘wrong’ in Italian,” says Pope. “This drink is a play on the Negroni Sbagliato cocktail where the gin is replaced with prosecco or sparkling wine. In our case, we used beer instead. Lone Star, of course! It’s great with food and showcases Wheelhouse’s beer program by adding a beer cocktail to the menu.”
Two more cocktails you’ll want to acquaint yourself with this summer: Daisy by Design and Thumper. The former is a cooling aperitif cocktail. “It’s lower in ABV than classic aperitifs,” says Solomon. “The Alpine liqueur and mint are really refreshing, while the base features rhum agricole from the island of Martinique and Bianco Vermouth.” And the Thumper? It’s an uncomplicated, but perfectly balanced mix of our favorite summer flavors: watermelon, gin, and lime with a dash of bitters.
